Intent
At Osmotherley Primary School we strive to provide a high-quality mathematics education, which….engages, inspires and challenges pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to become confident mathematicians, who can apply their knowledge and skills to solving problems and reason.
There is a clear progression in the skills and knowledge taught throughout the school, based on the Primary National Curriculum (2014) and deliberate practice allows children to improve fluency, leading to mastery and an alteration to their long-term memory.
Implementation
How mathematics will be taught at Osmotherley School?
White Rose Maths is used as a coherent and carefully sequenced framework for delivering high-quality mathematics teaching, enabling pupils to develop secure conceptual understanding alongside procedural accuracy and confidence.
Its small-step approach promotes coherence by connecting new learning explicitly to prior knowledge and ensuring that mathematical ideas build logically over time.
Through purposeful structure and representation, including concrete resources, pictorial models and abstract notation, teachers make underlying concepts visible and accessible to all learners.
Regular opportunities to practise, recall and apply key number facts and methods strengthen fluency. Mastering Number programmes are additionally used in EYFS, KS1 and Year 3 to build fluency in Additive facts and develop a strong number sense. Multiplicative fluency is strengthened through the Clare Christie approach in KS2.
Carefully designed examples and questions use variation to draw attention to important mathematical relationships, expose misconceptions and deepen understanding.
Throughout lessons, pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning, compare strategies and identify patterns, thereby making mathematical connections within and across topics.
Lessons are carefully planned to include deliberate practice so that knowledge is transferred into the long term memory. Recalls in the form of low-stakes quizzes or tasks are used routinely at 2, 6 and 12 weeks to check that essential knowledge is remembered and children are therefore well prepared for the next step in their learning.
Used responsively alongside ongoing assessment and adaptive teaching strategies, the teaching of mathematics at Osmotherley Primary school incorporates appropriate challenge, precise mathematical language and inclusive provision so that every pupil can progress towards mastery.
